Extreme Tech reportsthat a caller calledApplied Materialshas announce that a new etching system will earmark it to take 3D transistors from scientific aspiration to realism . You see , currently most flashgun memory is made up from a bunch of transistors grouped together to form thing called NAND gates , which can be used to salt away information . The problem is , though , that presently they have to be made in 2D layer . That mean the only elbow room to increase memory tightness for a give area is make the transistors little — but scientists are reaching a plateau , where they ca n’t concentrate things in size any longer .
The solution it to build up — a bit like building skyscraper in Manhattan . One way is just to pile layers on top of each other — and that ’s already done — but to really get high - compactness memory , you need to build a proper 3D NAND anatomical structure in the first place .
One split : according to Applied Materials , seek to build three-D NAND structures in actual life is like trying to dig a one - kilometer - thick , three - kilometer - recollective trench with wall on the nose three meter apart , through interleaved rock strata . scale down , obviously . Their young system , however , uses some neat tricks to make that possible — though they ’re not letting on precisely how it make for .
They do , however , admit that the 2D ratio of the resulting chips are akin to quondam NAND storage — but that the extra third dimension allows them to cram in memory space which massively offset the difference .
