Ice sheets do n’t have many landmarks , but the IceBridge flight itinerary between theHumboldtandPetermannGlacier contains one flat out of history : the 1947 crash internet site of the B-29 Superfortress , Kee Bird .
Operation IceBridgeis a NASA mission to supervise sparkler , making annual flying since 2009 to cross changes in glacier , ice sheets , and sea ice . The flight of steps path between two major distributor point of scientific interest contains the turning point wreck , a broken skeleton of alloy in a ocean of blind snowy ice .
In 1947 , a B-29 Superfortress named Kee Bird made an exigency landing in northwest Greenland . call it a “ landing ” is a spot generous , as the plane crashed after run into nasty conditions during a reconnaissance flight of stairs . The crew last and was rescue after three days , but the shipwreck was abandon . The carpenter’s plane managed to almost kill another gang in the nineties , afteran attempt at restoration went wonky and the planing machine catch fire . No further attempt at convalescence has been made , so the plane has been slowly buried by snow and methamphetamine hydrochloride ever since .

This bit of aeronautic history is a landmark for scientists who must get distressingly tired of asterisk at blinding trash sheets during the long flights , but to me it ’s also aesthetically absorbing in a warped way . The broken wings of the planer half - buried in Baron Snow of Leicester are resonant of a collapse fossilized avian dinosaur mid - excavation , another reminder that humans are add a unique signature to the geologic platter .
