Blu - ray Discs are getting a footprint - up , after the Blu - ray Disc Association announced two new specs for the format — BDXL , and IH - BD . There ’s bad news however — you’ll need to purchase a new player / recording machine to utilise the 128 GB discs .

The new BDXL specification key High Capacity Recordable and Rewritable discs which will spell up to 128 GB of content on each disc . These are write - once content , with the rewritable discs allow for 100 GB of depot . For now it ’s just for commercial usage , but the BDA will be launching consumer BDXL discs , which will be handy for those of us plan on endow in a Blu - ray fipple pipe in the near future .

The IH - BD data formatting will contain two layer of 25 GB capacity each — one for BD - read-only storage use , and the other a BD - RE layer , design for view but not overwrite data .

While the extra storage electrical capacity for the BDXL discs is welcome , it ’s not all good news — as the BDA has warned that they wo n’t be compatible with existing hardware . Look out for BDXL and IH - BD supported Blu - ray players and recording equipment soon . [ BusinessWire ]
