Shot in the Central Plains of Texas , the footage was captured on a Canon 5D Mark II with a Rokinon 14 mm 2.8 genus Lens . It ’s actually break up into four different part , because Oblinski and his friend Andy Hoeland started out on a side of the storm where it was too showery to see anything . Then they actually drive THROUGH the tempest to see the crazy swarm structure form . Fortunately , the storm did n’t actually wrench into a full - mature crack .
