The idea was sound : to make a share creation of Universal Monster place . Cast massive adept , recruit top - notch talent , and build a massive enfranchisement . If it worked , it would have been epic . Then the first movie , Tom Cruise ’s The Mummy , was released … and the Dark Universe ended before it could start .
One of the people responsible for the Dark Universe was Chris Morgan . Morgan , who ’s write every Fast and enraged motion-picture show from Tokyo Drift to this week ’s Hobbs & Shaw , was tapped as a manufacturer on the would - be franchise ( along with Mummy director Alex Kurtzman ) , and io9 recently asked him if he had any regrets about the whole speculation .

After cancelingthe Bill Condon Bride of Frankenstein film , which all but killed that loop of the Dark Universe , Universalwent back to the drawing board . The first result of that is The Invisible Man , a character that was coiffe to beplayed by Johnny Deppin the Dark Universe , but isnow being played by Oliver Jackson - Cohenin a flick directed by Leigh Whannell and produced by Jason Blum . Whannell is now germinate that film , which is aiming for a rather aggressive March 13 , 2020 exit .
“ I think Universal ’s going about the monster films the right way , ” Morgan said about the unexampled scheme . “ Which is to really focus on taking a good hand , right taradiddle , put it out there , if you ’re die to build a population make it from something strong like that . And I think they ’re not so much upset about putting a cosmos out there as they are making great monster films , so I ’m count forward to seeing them . ”
