Constantine swap the rather slow Liv for the mysterious Zed as our hero ’s mystery - puzzle out sidekick , and Zed proves a much better match for the sardonic exorcist . Unfortunately , this minelaying townsfolk execution plot does n’t go up to the grotesque tone set up by the pilot .
This week ’s installment functioned as a sort of second Constantine pilot , changing the story so that it ’s not just about John Constantine following Liv ’s bloodspot map , but also about Zed and John taste to work the closed book of their connection . And that aspect — the family relationship between John and Zed — is by far the strongest aspect of this sequence .
Just because John is a dabbler in the dark arts , that does n’t mean that he takes the appearing of deception at expression note value . So when Zed approaches him the street persuade a charcoal portrait of him , John immediately suspect that she ’s a con creative person and uses a simple bit of mesmerism to ditch her . In fairness , she did slip his wallet and she is on the running , so con artist may not be far off .
Zed ’s insistence that John take her on as a partner seems bear of her defeat with her persistent visions of him — though the final lines of the episode imply that her motif may be more sinister . But if John was hop to go after her off , his function of her ability likely would have done it . Speaking of which , we should probably discuss this week ’s whodunit .
We open on a Welsh excavation town in Pennsylvania where a mining boss has a tense conversation with his wife ( holy L Word , it ’s Leisha Hailey ! ) before stepping into the shower , which sprinkle out flames instead of water . It turn out that this is n’t the first such death in the town , and in what ’s actually a nicely creepy scene , John realise that the mines control Knockers , the spirits of dead miners who criticise on the walls to prevent know mineworker from labor in serious musca volitans .
tit are , however , philanthropic spirits , so John suspects that some human being is force them to place these acts of retribution . Because we need to apply Zed ’s powers for the sake of plot , John completely ignores the most obvious suspect : Leisha Hailey ’s character . After all , before awkwardly hit on John and then shrieking him out of her mansion , she distinguish him that she is a Romany , which in supernatural media speak means she ’s a magic substance abuser . But no , first we need a blood-red herring in the var. of Zed ’s visions .
I ’m almost a little sad that the ex - non-Christian priest in this episode is a one - off character ; I rather enjoyed his interactions with both John and Zed . After John meets the confrere at his camping site and realizes just who is killing the mining bosses , he decide to allot with the Knockers in the simplest way potential : by cue them that they ’re the courteous guys .
The culmination , in which John confronts Leisha Hailey and takes her out by summoning the Knocker spirit of her dead husband , is comforting , but after the wonderful possessions and exorcisms we get word last hebdomad , I ’m mint by how this hebdomad ’s mystery could belong to any supernatural show . But perhaps that ’s a side issue of this episode needing to focus on Zed and John ’s relationship . I just go for that the show has something else to make out itself besides its lead character .
