It was hardly idealistic weather for the Resurrection of Christ of one ’s heavy - aunt , but Sera Swan ’s wizardly power , while impressive , had n’t the little influence over the objectionably blue sky . Autumn had not yet arrived in the northwest of England , the birds had set up a chirpy shake in the bright midday sunshine , and there was a corpse in the back garden .
“ You could do with a loving cup of tea first , ” Clemmie remark . “ You ’re a mess . You ca n’t go resurrecting masses when you ’re all blotchy and snotty . ”
Sera choose to ignore the insult , and the dubious logic therein . She shoved her hands deep into the scoop of her jean , tuck her arms close to her sides as if they might protect her from whatever might happen next , and said , without taking her eye off the consistency on the ground : “ Are you certain this will work ? ”
“ Would I consist to you ? ”
“ You lied to me less than an hr ago . When you differentiate me the Tooth Fairy ate the last of the peanut butter . The Tooth Fairy ! How honest-to-god do you think I am ? And last Nox , you said — ”
“ Yes , yes , all justly , ” Clemmie interrupted her hastily . “ I may have been known to fib in the past , but new leaves have been turn . ”
Sera was quite indisputable a barren barren stood a greater chance of turn new leaves than Clemmie did , but decided not to say so .
With a swish of her bushy red tail , Clemmie turned and trot back to the house . “ Well ? Are you come ? Jasmine ’s drained and I have n’t got opposable pollex . That Camellia sinensis wo n’t make itself , you know . ”
It was just as well the lodge was empty this weekend and there were no bystander to observe this conniption , for as scenes move , it was definitely peculiar . It was like the origin of a bad joke . A corpse , a witch , and a fox walk into a bar …
( really , it was more like a cadaver and two beldame , and one of those witches happened to be pin down in the form of a small , chubby red fox . Sera was n’t certain if that would meliorate the prank or not . )
Sera , who was fifteen geezerhood former and honestly out of her depth , waffle beside Great - Auntie Jasmine ’s body . Was she really going to cast a spell with nothing but Clemmie ’s word to go on ? Clemmie , who had turned up out of the blue a few calendar month ago and had yet to propose any tangible answers about who she really was or how she ’d end up ensnare in Charles James Fox configuration ? She was the very diametric of trustworthy , but Sera was get to have to trust her today or she would turn a loss Jasmine for goodness .
Sera had plenty of exponent and not enough noesis , and Clemmie had plenty of cognition and not enough power . That was all that mattered mightily now . Sera commend little of what had happened after that , though her in the raw eyes informed her that there had indeed been plenty of tears and probably one or two hysteric .
Sera did remember that she ’d stood up to go regain a phone . The reasonable thing to do , she ’d reasoned , was to dial 999 and permit a grown - up take charge .
Then Clemmie had tutted , stopping her in her tracks . “ How tiresome . I expected Jasmine to have more sense and better manners than to die in the garden . On a hot day like this , she ’ll get icky very quickly . We ’ll have to process tight . ”
At which point Clemmie had expose she knew how to resurrect the dead . As a gatherer of uncommon , powerful spells of dubious legality and even more questionable morality , Clemmie knew all sort of spells that other people did n’t . Sera had have it away this for some time because Clemmie could not resist telling her at every available chance . She had never had the power to cast most of aver piece , she ’d admit somewhat petulantly , but that had not dampened her fondness for knowing more than everybody else . Sera had n’t eff that this fussy spell was in Clemmie ’s cache , however , because the legality of a resurrection spell was n’t dubious at all . It was , in fact , very illegal .
“ It ’s an old law , ” Clemmie had said dismissively . “ date stamp back to the day when beldame actually had the magic necessary to vomit a spell of this size . None of us have had that kind of world power in yonks . ” Then she ’d cocked her fox head , eyeball Sera with a shiny , speculative regard . “ You might , though . You ’re the most as if by magic talented witch the British Guild of Sorcery has seen in generation . You might be able to cast this patch and bestow Jasmine back . ”
“ Tell me what to do , ” she ’d allege at once .
“ Do n’t you desire to think about it first ? ”
“ No . ” Thinking was precisely what Sera wanted to avoid . If she start up thinking , her heart would cockle at the thought of losing the woman who had been more of a parent to her than her own parents had ever been , who had tucked her in at night , handsewn dozens of beautiful flyspeck wearing apparel for her dolls , limp painstakingly up the stair to soothe every nightmare , and made her C of pancakes over the long time . No , mentation was out of the question .
“ A go like this will require a nifty deal of your trick , ” Clemmie had warned .
“ I have plenteousness to spare . ”
