large shocker : turns out Stannis Baratheon felt really bad about mow down a cluster of his family line member on Game of Thrones and was certain he would go to hell for it , as shown in some recently excised dialogue from his time of year five death view . Good , because sacrifice a child to a flack divinity is a pretty painful thing .
A recentRedditpost share some interesting tidbits from the original script for the episode “ Mother ’s Mercy . ” The script , first revealedbefore the Emmys about two days ago , included some unused dialogue between King Stannis Baratheon ( Stephen Dillane ) and Brienne of Tarth ( Gwendoline Christie ) . It ’s the moment when Brienne discover Stannis after his humiliating defeat at the hand of Ramsay Bolton . As he ’s lento bleeding out , Brienne prepares to carry out her swear oath to avenge Renly Baratheon ’s death .
In the televised variant , when Brienne enquire if Stannis has any last dustup , he simply responds , “ Go on , do your duty . ” It ’s a powerful moment that , largely thanks to the actor , do to convey his final regrets as he consents to his destiny . However , that ’s not how it was set to go down . In the script variant , he was a lot more remorseful , apologetic , and resigned to his shitty hereafter . Here ’s the original dialogue :

BRIENNE
I was Kingsguard to Renly Baratheon . I was there when he was murdered by a phantasm with your face .
[ Stannis was not expecting this opposition today , but fuck it , why not . ]

You dispatch him ? With lineage magic ?
[ Stannis nod . ]
STANNIS

I did .
In the name of Renly of the House Baratheon , first of his name , lawful King of the Andals and the First Men , Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and protector of the realm , I , Brienne of Tarth , sentence you to drop dead .
[ Stannis nod . He ’s ready . ]

Do you have any last words ?
[ Stannis considers . ]
STANNIS : Do you trust in the life to amount ?

[ Brienne nod ]
STANNIS : I do n’t . But if I ’m faulty , and you ’re right … recount Renly I ’m sorry when you get there . I do n’t imagine I ’ll see him wherever I ’m going . ( metre ) And my girl . Tell her … tell her …
[ ‘ Sorry ’ does n’t even begin to extend what he feels about Shireen . The thought of it brings tears to his eyes , and he ’s not going to pall weep in front of a woman he does n’t know .

Stannis star up at her . ]
STANNIS : Go on , do your duty .
[ Brienne raises her sword and brings it down with a mighty swing . ]

It ’s kind of interesting , because there ’s really never been a clear portrait of nirvana or hell in HBO ’s Game of Thrones , peculiarly for R’hllor , i.e. the Red Faith that Stannis Baratheon and Melisandre worship . In the book , there ’s a bit more explanation of the afterlife . For example , the Faith of the Seven preaches the universe of seven heavens and seven underworld , and the Drowned Faith has a Valhalla - corresponding realm where its fighters can tope and reminisce about the expert old days of plundering .
All of that said , the showrunners decidedly made the ripe choice take out Stannis ’ final apologies . They were n’t necessary . The worker did an amazing Book of Job at conveying his net sorrow through his reflection and mannerism alone . We did n’t need a reminder that he feel forged about sacrifice his girl to the Lord of Light . Although , I will say , it was squeamish to hear him say “ sorry ” about have Melisandre assassinate his blood brother via vagina smoke monster . severely , what the the pits , man ?
