Sorry I ’m come to this book late — it came out in late March , but I only just read it . It represents a bit of a passing for Wolfe : It ’s a standalone urban phantasy novel that unfolds like a Graeco-Roman mystery . And it ’s an epistolary novel , a form which is all too rare nowadays . I ’m a Brobdingnagian fan of epistolary novels , having read everything Samuel Richardson ever wrote — even Sir Charles Grandison . Oh , and it ’s moderately much lightweight fluff , without much of the darkness or denseness of Wolfe ’s other work .
Like the other “ uncanny star sign ” novels I wrote about a while back , The Sorcerer ’s House centers around a man who lucks into a eldritch old dwelling , and discovers that it comes with a lot more than beautiful fixture and a nice view . In this particular type , the house is conceive to be haunted , but the true statement is much weirder than that . There are multiple solidification of twins in the novel — the master character is a Gemini who believe himself to be the “ Evil twin , ” and he ’s recently gotten out of prison house . And he run into another set of twins who seem to have a standardised good / bad duality , but it slowly becomes apparent that the dualities are not as clearly - cut as they first appear .
The chief character reference , Bax , start the book having just gotten out of prison , with almost nothing to his name . He ’s stateless and friendless , and his twin brother wo n’t even utter to him . And then after he starts squatting in the mysterious “ haunted ” house in the Ithiel Town of Medicine Man , he suddenly learn that he ’s the theatre ’s rightful owner . Soon money , fancy cars , beautiful fair sex , huge parcel of land of worthful commonwealth , and sexy fox - fairies are all falling into his lap , and everybody wants to be his friend . Will all this sudden good circumstances bring with it a dark swearword ? perhaps , if the presence of a werewolf who keeps dismembering people in Bax ’s neighbourhood is anything to go by .
Early on in the novel , Wolfe suggest at a great darkness , and a world of tremendous power that may destroy Bax if he does n’t get the hang it — but there ’s very little iniquity in this book after the first hundred Sir Frederick Handley Page or so . It ’s almost as if Wolfe could n’t stick out to have anything unpleasant materialise to his main reference , whose good fortune keeps getting better and better . It ’s a remarkably sunny version of illusion literature , and though the novel runs out of story steam towards the end , by that point you ’re already drawn in by Wolfe ’s prodigious invention .
And the first one-half of the book , in which Bax explore the mysterious house and keeps finding newer , unearthly room and strange widget , while the two charming twins and assorted strange creatures keep scarper in and out of his home , is really splendid . It ’s easy to see why the sinister / weird house is such a prolific gimmick in literature these solar day — it ’s got a mother wit of position , and the estimation of a piece of computer architecture harbor concealed doors and cloak-and-dagger transit is sort of driven . And the idea of weird entities coming into your bedroom is irresistibly creepy-crawly .
Throughout the al-Qur’an , Wolfe drops little insights into the nature of conjuring trick and faerie – include the idea that illusion , at its source , is a signifier of finesse . And the mind that nobody ever ages or go in faerie — so the place must be special - unfriendly and uncivilised , to keep the universe from growing endlessly . There ’s more than enough cleverness and fun in this book to keep you zip through on your way into the warmness of the mystery story .
