In 1731 , a great firing displume through a house in England that was being used to temporarily hold numerous significant holograph , get it on asThe Cotton aggregation . Thirteen manuscripts perished completely , and many others sustained significant scathe . Although effort were made to piece together the scorched fragments , much of the subject matter in the affected manuscripts remain unreadable .

One textbook that was part take by the fire was one of four copies of theMagna Carta , which is Latin for “ Great Charter . ” The Magna Carta was a papers of basic rights signed in 1215 by barons of Medieval England and King John as part of an endeavour to prevent the King from abusing his power . Today , the Magna Carta is widely recognise as thecornerstone of organic legal philosophy .

This fussy copy , known as the “ Burnt Magna Carta , ” was largely unreadable for more than 280 geezerhood , despite numerous attempts to restore it . But now , using a technique called multispectral imaging , a squad of conservators and scientists at the British Library ( BL ) has trace the char text without damaging it further . This cutting - edge method — which imply using a combination of seeable , ultraviolet and infrared light to snap the written document — allow for the team to “ virtually strip away the level of damage , ” said theBritish Library .

Because the chemical make - up of the cloth varies , unlike components oppose otherwise to the lights . “ If you ’re interested in the ink , the ultraviolet spark gives you the dear information . If you are interested in the actual grain of the sheepskin itself , the infrared would be practiced , ” BL imaging scientist toldLive Science . “ You end up with multiple images of fundamentally the same affair , but giving you different information . ”

Although the text in each of the copies is virtually monovular , according to Julian Harrison , conservator of medieval manuscripts at the BL , all of the papers feature differences because they werehandwritten .

The four manuscripts will be reunite in February 2015 to mark the 800thanniversary of the waterproofing of the Magna Carta .
